Ancient temples and palaces in Kerala, India, display an abounding tradition of mural paintings, mostly dating from the 9th to 12th centuries CE, when this form enjoyed royal patronage. Kerala mural paintings are frescoes depicting Hindu mythology in Kerala. Murals were initially painted on temple walls to experience God’s presence outside the temple. The traditional colors used in this art are red, yellow ochre, green, blue, white, and black. The classic style mural art form uses natural pigments and vegetable colors. But today, the colors used are bright synthetic colors.
